Reimagining Precious Moments: From Perishable to Eternal

In my latest body of work, I explore the intersection of memory, materiality, and modern consumption through a transformation of Precious Moments figurines—delicate, sentimental objects often associated with nostalgia and fleeting innocence—into something more enduring and concrete. By coating these traditionally fragile ceramic pieces in a metallic bronze finish, I imbue them with a sense of permanence, contrasting their original ephemeral nature with an almost sculptural, timeless quality. At the same time, I juxtapose these preserved figures with an unexpected element: the disposable, everyday Amazon box.

This artistic exploration is rooted in my fascination with readymades, a concept pioneered by Marcel Duchamp, in which ordinary, mass-produced objects are recontextualized as art simply by the artist’s selection and presentation. The Precious Moments figurines, sentimental keepsakes often overlooked in contemporary discourse, take on a new visual and conceptual weight when transformed into metallic forms. By painting them in a bronze hue, I alter the way they are perceived—not just as fragile relics of childhood and nostalgia, but as objects that demand a more critical and lasting presence in the viewer’s consciousness.

At the heart of this work is a dialogue between permanence and impermanence. The Precious Moments figures represent fleeting, tender memories—of childhood, family, and love—often relegated to the back of curio cabinets or lost over time. Their fragility is symbolic of how easily moments in our lives slip away, break, or are forgotten. Yet, through my intervention, these figures are no longer so easily shattered. The metallic coating gives them weight, durability, and an almost sacred quality, elevating them from kitsch to something more enduring.

The inclusion of Amazon boxes introduces a contemporary counterpoint. These disposable, utilitarian objects are part of our daily lives, carrying the products we order with the tap of a finger—items that fulfill our desires, needs, and momentary impulses. They are the epitome of consumer culture, transient and often discarded without thought. By combining these perishable cardboard boxes with the now-hardened Precious Moments figures, I highlight the contrast between what we choose to preserve and what we throw away.

Additionally, I incorporate traditional Chinese rice paper with hand-painted calligraphy, weaving in layers of history, cultural storytelling, and craftsmanship. The rice paper, fragile and delicate, echoes the ephemeral nature of both memory and material things. Its presence in contrast to the metallic figures and disposable Amazon boxes creates a visual and conceptual tension—between past and present, permanence and impermanence, sentimentality and consumerism.

Through this work, I invite the viewer to reflect on what we value and why. In a world driven by rapid consumption, where deliveries arrive at our doorstep daily and are quickly discarded, what truly lasts? What holds meaning? By transforming these once-fragile figures into something visually and physically enduring, and placing them alongside objects that define modern transience, I seek to question our relationship with memory, materialism, and the passage of time.

In the end, my work is about giving form to the intangible—solidifying memories, preserving sentiment, and challenging the viewer to reconsider the objects that shape their lives. Through this transformation, Precious Moments are no longer just breakable relics of the past, but rather, enduring markers of human experience.
